Defensive Devils host Canadiens
Hockey Betting Lines
01/22/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Fresh off a strong defensive performance, the New Jersey Devils will aim for back-to-back wins when they welcome the sliding Montreal Canadiens for tonight's battle at Prudential Center.
The Devils ended a three-game losing streak with Wednesday's 2-0 decision over
visiting Florida. New Jersey allowed just 22 shots on net and Martin Brodeur
stopped every one to extend his NHL record for career shutouts to 108.
Brodeur, who is also the NHL's all-time wins leader, has seven shutouts this
season and six of those white-washings have come since the start of December.
The future Hall-of-Famer also notched his 30th win of the season with the
effort, the 13th time he has reached the plateau as a professional. Brodeur is
tied with Patrick Roy for the most seasons with 30 or more wins in league
history.
Travis Zajac and Dean McAmmond scored for the Devils, who bounced back after
losing the final three tests of a four-game road trip.
"We haven't played that well, it's obvious by this losing streak," Brodeur
said. "We're comfortable playing here and we did what we wanted right away.
Guys seemed a lot more comfortable playing their game."
New Jersey comes into tonight as the first-place club in the Atlantic Division
with 67 points, but Pittsburgh is just four points behind the Devils.
The Devils are wrapping a brief two-game homestand tonight and have a strong
17-7-0 record as the host this year. Jersey will begin a three-game road trip
Saturday against the New York Islanders.
Patrik Elias will miss his third straight game for the Devils tonight as
recent tests revealed that the veteran forward has a concussion. There is no
timetable for his return, but the Devils said he will be re-evaluated later
this week. Elias was named as the captain of Team Czech Republic for the 2010
Winter Games in Vancouver, but his status for that event is now in question.
Montreal comes into tonight having lost three in a row, but the Habs were at
least able to record a point in an overtime loss on Wednesday against visiting
St. Louis.
The Canadiens charged back from a 3-1 deficit in the third to force the extra
session, but Andy McDonald scored the game-winner for the Blues at 3:10 of OT.
McDonald took a feed from Paul Kariya and let go a sizzling wrist shot that
found room in the top left corner of the net.
Michael Cammalleri tied the game for Montreal with 33 seconds left in the
third period and Canadiens netminder Carey Price stationed on the bench.
Benoit Pouliot lit the lamp twice for the Habs, who have lost six of eight
games overall. Price stopped 24 shots in defeat.
"In the third we bounced back," Pouliot said. "We played in their zone. We
came back to tie and get at least one point."
Montreal is 12-12-1 as the guest this year and will try to end a two-game road
slide tonight.
The Devils have posted a pair of 2-1 victories over Montreal this season.
Jersey won a home test over the Habs in regulation on December 16 and then
secured an OT victory in Montreal on January 9. The Devils have taken six
straight in the series overall and the Canadiens have lost three in a row to
New jersey as the visiting team.

Big 12 Conference betting odds
Work left to do: Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Texas joins Texas A&M and Kansas as locks after getting league win No. 11. Texas Tech greatly helped its own hopes and crippled OK State's with the two-point win Saturday. Is K-State the last reasonable hopeful? Could be an elimination match in Stillwater on Tuesday, at least for the Cowboys.
Work left to do:
Texas Tech [18-11 (7-7), RPI: 44, SOS: 12] A critical two-point win over OK State leaves the Red Raiders with Baylor and at Iowa State left. Get both and the Red Raiders likely are good to go. Get one and there could be some interesting comparisons with a K-State team that could finish two or three games "ahead" of them in the standings but doesn't have any of the quality wins Texas Tech has. Not a lot in nonconference play (against Arkansas in Little Rock being the best win, by far) to lean on.
Oklahoma State [18-9 (5-8), RPI: 50, SOS: 35] Still without a road win, the Cowboys now need to win two on the road just to get to .500 in conference play. It's hard to recall a team (OK, other than Clemson) falling so precipitously from lock status to almost certainly out of the NCAAs at this point. There are wins to be had in the last three, including a very big home game against K-State on Tuesday, but this team is reeling. Can you tell the pressure to win is getting to them with the way the final possession played out at Texas Tech? There are some good nonconference performances to lean on, specifically beating Missouri State and Syracuse on neutral floors and Pitt in OK City, but if the Pokes don't right this very, very soon, that won't be enough.
Kansas State [20-9 (9-5), RPI: 56, SOS: 96] It pays to be in the Big 12 North. The nine league wins are Colorado (twice), Missouri (twice), Iowa State (twice), Baylor, Nebraska and (a good one against) Texas. That helps explain the middling computer profile. The win over USC is nice, but the nonconference leaves a lot to be desired. The game at OK State in Stillwater on Tuesday is huge, as it could KO the Cowboys and leave K-State with a home date against Oklahoma with which to work.
